Bacteria and viruses can even get on things we least expect. Don't worry; there are ways to fight these germs (more on that later)! But to ensure you are keeping yourself and others safe, it's vital to know how bacteria can be spread.
Viruses and bacteria can spread to a person in various ways, and we will go over a few of the big culprits.
Coughing and Sneezing
The airborne spread of bacteria is incredibly common. For example, did you know that particles and droplets can travel up to 25 feet when you sneeze? They also stay in the air for up to ten minutes, making it easy to inhale them into your respiratory system.
Person to Person
This one speaks for itself. If you come in contact with someone sick and infected with a virus, the chances increase that they can spread viruses to you. From the things they touch to their coughing and sneezing, germs can be spread easily between people, especially with the more time you spend around them.
Bacteria living on surfaces is one of the biggest ways they can spread. Think about how many people touch a doorknob at a restaurant or the screens at a self-checkout line at the grocery store. Even setting your phone down on the table can spread germs to it and then close to your mouth when you take a call. Some viruses can even live for a few days on surfaces that aren't regularly disinfected.
Whether it's cooking with raw meat or not properly cleaning the kitchen, bacteria love to settle and grow on food, especially things that have been left on the counter for a long time. When you see food spoil and mold, that's harmful bacteria!
If you're doing all the basics: washing hands, wiping down surfaces, or wearing masks – that's step one.
But you can always add a layer of protection. New antimicrobial and antiviral products are incredibly effective at killing germs and are gaining in popularity. They are safe are give you that extra piece of mind.
These products kill bacteria and slow the spread of microorganisms and are the future of cleaning. Why? Because they use silver ions to puncture the cell walls of bacteria. Once inside, these ions get to work by inhibiting the bacteria's cellular respiration and other main functions to kill it.
Antimicrobial and antiviral products undergo rigorous testing and are very safe to use on the human body. And here at The Kare Lab, we are at the forefront of developing some of the latest antiviral and antimicrobial protection devices.
Imagine not worrying about the germs all over those highly used surfaces like doorknobs, elevator buttons, or bathrooms. Our antiviral and antimicrobials surface protection film can be applied to high touchpoints, eliminating 99.9% of bacteria, including COVID-19. Its durable coating even lasts for one year!
We use our phones and laptops every day, and who knows what germs they can pick up! So we developed an antimicrobial touch screen casing that eliminates 99.9% of bacteria to keep your phones and laptops free from harmful germs! Like standard screen protectors, they don't disrupt the abilities of your touch screen or the sharpness of your screen's display.
Limiting food waste is not only good for your wallet but for our environment as well. Antimicrobial protection has made its way into food packaging. The Kare Labs' antimicrobial packaging protection film greatly reduces the growth of microorganisms and fungi on food during transportation. Our antiviral packaging also increases food shelf life by preventing the spread of airborne bacteria and delaying the natural bacterial growth process. Hence, this helps prevent food loses and free from fallen viruses and bacterial.

In a world teeming with invisible microbial enemies, we are all in a constant battle to keep ourselves free from bacteria and other infectious agents. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this even truer, as we learned the hard way that bacteria, fungi, and viruses can spread quickly and wreak havoc on our health.
To fight off these foes, we all ran into a confusing array of products claiming to protect us from microbial threats. From the all-important hand sanitizer to the latest miracle-working cleaning sprays, we witnessed it all. But among them, two terms were used more than others: antibacterial and antimicrobial.
The pandemic may be over, but the confusion caused by these two terms is far from done. So, what’s the difference between antimicrobial and antibacterial? Read on to find out.
Antimicrobial materials have the capacity to halt the proliferation or eliminate a diverse range of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. These substances are essential in mitigating the transmission of infections while maintaining a sanitary and hygienic atmosphere.
The multifaceted agents are employed in a variety of sectors, including surface disinfectants, infection-fighting antibiotics, and preservatives in food and cosmetics. The primary objective of using antimicrobial substances is to curb the transmission of infectious diseases and promote overall public health.
This is made possible by the unique ability of antimicrobial agents to target a vast array of microorganisms, including those resistant to antibiotics. As such, antimicrobials are commonly used in healthcare facilities and labs as part of their infection-prevention protocols.
Antibacterial refers to substances or agents that specifically target and either kill (bactericidal) or inhibit the growth and reproduction (bacteriostatic) of bacteria. Unlike antimicrobial agents, which cover a broader spectrum of microorganisms, antibacterial substances focus exclusively on bacteria.
These agents play a significant role in preventing and treating bacterial infections, as well as promoting hygiene and cleanliness. They can be found in various forms, such as antibiotics used in medical treatments, disinfecting products for household or industrial use, and personal care products like hand sanitizers and soaps.
In essence, antibacterial substances are a subset of antimicrobial agents, with their primary function being the control, prevention, and treatment of bacterial infections and contamination.
Now that we’ve established the definitions of antimicrobial versus antibacterial substances, let’s delve into their key differences to help clarify the distinction between the two:
The most notable difference between antimicrobial and antibacterial agents is their scope of action. Antimicrobial substances have a broader spectrum, targeting various microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
In contrast, antibacterial agents specifically target bacteria, focusing solely on preventing and treating bacterial infections.
Both antimicrobial and antibacterial substances are employed in numerous industries and applications. However, due to their broader scope, antimicrobial agents are more versatile. As a result, they can be found in a wider range of products, such as medical treatments, agricultural practices, and preservation methods for food and cosmetics.
Antibacterial substances, on the other hand, are more commonly found in products specifically designed to address bacterial contamination, such as antibiotics and certain disinfectants.
Antimicrobial substances may be effective against a broader range of microorganisms, including those that have developed resistance to antibiotics. This makes them particularly valuable in healthcare settings and laboratories, where combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria is paramount.
Antibacterial agents, especially antibiotics, can lose their efficacy over time as bacteria evolve and develop resistance to them.
In conclusion, although both antimicrobial and antibacterial substances share the same primary objective of preventing and treating infectious diseases, their key differences lie in their scope of action, applications, and effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
By understanding the distinction between antimicrobial vs antibacterial agents, you can make informed decisions regarding your personal health and safety and select the right product for your specific needs.
The Kare Lab is here to help you make those decisions, providing top-to-toe protection with our comprehensive range of medical-grade PPE products and services. Browse through our selection of face masks, gloves, and antimicrobial/antibacterial coatings for the protection you need.

Knowing of the ill effects these pathogens cause to our health, it’s no wonder that society is now looking for new ways to prevent their transmission. Silver ion technology, in particular, is emerging as a way to prevent infection without requiring any extra effort from you.
Silver Ion (Ag+) technology distributes silver ions evenly throughout a glass matrix. These ions are active, which allows them to penetrate bacterial membranes and disrupt the growth of microorganisms.
Silver ion technology can be incorporated into various materials, including coatings, polymers, textiles, and more, offering antimicrobial and antiviral protection on surfaces that can serve as a breeding ground for infection.
In fact, the primary appeal of silver ion technology is its ability to prevent the formation of a biofilm. Biofilms are communities of microorganisms known for being considerably less sensitive to disinfectants, making it harder to remove these bacteria once they have already set in. However, silver ion technology can help prevent biofilm formation while also keeping infection growth to a minimum. This makes it especially appealing for high-touch surfaces such as cell phones and door handles.
There are four primary processes by which silver ion technology exhibits its antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
Damages Protein
Protein is an essential part of survival for all biological systems, and silver ion causes damage to the proteins of microorganisms. By damaging their proteins, the microorganisms cannot perform crucial functions, keeping them from growing and replicating.
Damages The Cell Membrane
Silver ion technology also damages the microorganism’s cell membrane, allowing nutrients to leak out. As the cell membrane is further damaged, it can burst, killing the cell.
Incites Oxidative Damage
Microorganisms respond to silver ions in their cells with increasing levels of reactive oxygen. However, this then causes internal damage.
Interferes with DNA Copying
A key component for all infection types is the copying of genetic material, but silver ion technology blocks this action. With this effect, the cell or virus cannot replicate, and their growth is halted.
When it comes to stopping infections, one point of concern is microorganisms lingering on surfaces, which can then be transferred to someone else with a simple touch. Disinfectants are effective at cleaning these high-touch surfaces, but they must be used continuously to achieve the level of cleanliness deemed safe.
In fact, established criteria state that high-touch surfaces must not exceed 250 colony-forming units of microbes per one square centimeter to be safe for humans. However, to keep up with these limits you would need to use harsh disinfectants every two hours because of how quickly the bacteria rebound, a schedule that is unlikely to be adhered to.
To ensure that surfaces are continually safe, silver ion technology is available, using the active nature of silver ions to destroy microorganisms and prevent them from growing and reproducing. By infusing silver ions into the products that you use the most, you can keep yourself and those around you safe by stopping bacterial and viral infections before they have a chance to start.

]]>Masks come in various types, which are categorized based on their effectiveness at preventing the transmission of pathogens. Of all these kinds of face masks, the KN95 is one of those that has become very popular. There are recommendations from the CDC about the types of masks that can be won. However, mask users can determine their choice of face mask by understanding what each type of mask is and how they work.
KN95 face masks are semi respirators that have been used in the medical and industrial sector long before the use of face masks became conventional. Respirators are quite different from the more common surgical masks in that they fit firmly on the face and filter out more airborne particles.
KN95 stands next to N95 masks in terms of quality and efficiency. N95 face masks have been restricted for use by health care providers alone. This is so that supplies of the masks can be monitored and health workers can have enough face mask reserves. While N95 masks are the US standard for high filtration face masks, KN95 masks are the Chinese variants and can be used by persons who seek the highest protection they can obtain from the use of face masks.
KN95 masks are made from non-woven synthetic fiber. They come with elastic strings that can be tied at the back of the head and can be worn on the neck when not in use. A KN95 mask filters out more particles than surgical masks and cloth masks. The masks usually bear a label that indicates their quality grade as respirators. They may or may not come with breathing valves.
N95 and KN95 face masks are called for their ability to filter out up to 95% of particles with 0.3 microns in size. The filtering efficiency is about 99% for particles as small as 0.1 microns. It may be possible to eliminate even a higher percentage of particles per micron size using KN95 depending on the production quality. Coronaviruses have a size of approximately 0.125 microns.
In order for a virus to spread, it must attach to media such as droplets from the mouth or nose. The average size of cough droplets is about 8.35 microns, making the KN95 very efficient in limiting the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other flues. Suppose a lone coronavirus can successfully land on a KN95; the mask has enough filtering power to prevent the virus from getting to its other side.
Anyone, including health care workers, can wear KN95 masks. They can be worn in public to reduce the risk of contracting respiratory tract infections and can be used in industries to filter dust, aerosols, and other dangerous particles away from the nose.
Persons already diagnosed with infectious diseases such as COVID-19 can also wear KN95 masks as they limit the transmission of droplets from the wearer’s airways to the external environment.
Filtering Face Pieces (FFP masks) are commonly referenced when face masks are being discussed. FFP masks are half masks like the KN95 but are the European Union’s standard for quality respirators. KN95 and FFP masks are similar in efficiency, and both can be worn for medical and industrial purposes.
FFP masks are divided into three grades, with each type recommended to specific populations depending on the size of hazardous particles they are exposed to:
KN95 masks are one of the best-grade masks recommended for protection against coronaviruses and other known flues. They are Chinese variants of the US N95 standard masks and can also be worn by health care professionals. According to American standards, KN95 masks can offer reasonable protection against respiratory infections. For the best results, they are to be used in accordance with the guidelines provided by the CDC for protection against COVID-19 infection.
]]>Different medical gowns are used for specific situations where essential protective equipment or better protection is needed. All medical-quality isolation gowns must go through a series of tests to meet the standards set by AAMI.
Medical isolation gowns are personal protective equipment used by health care workers. These gowns can come in different varieties for specific health care settings like for surgeries and operating room use.
This protective equipment serves as a barrier for the host against possible infection when they contact infected solid or liquid material, like respiratory droplets. Medical isolation gowns are also helpful when facing vulnerable and immunocompromised patients, as these gowns bar germs from being exposed to these patients.
There are critical zones found in surgical gowns. These critical zones are where direct contact with possible infectious material like bodily fluid is most likely to land. These are on the sleeves and centre of the gown.
For these gowns to effectively protect the user, the wearer must tie them correctly. When they’re soiled or the user must leave the area, they must take the gown off, dispose of it, and immediately wash their hands afterwards.
There are different gowns appropriate for specific medical settings, as some settings may require better protection, and some are for simple health set-ups.
Four levels of AAMI ratings for medical isolation gowns are set, largely dependent on their ability to be barriers against fluids, blood-borne pathogens, and viruses.
The lowest medical gown level, level 1, provides the lowest barrier protection. It only has a minimal level of protection against fluids. Due to this, its use is restricted to settings where there is minimal risk of fluid exposure. These gowns are for daily patient care, visitors, routine check-ups, and the like.
Level 2 provides a low level of protection from fluids. It protects the wearer from infection through splatter or soaking. Unlike the previous level, health workers use these inside the intensive care unit or the pathology lab. Health care workers also wear this protective medical gown when suturing or drawing blood.
Level 3 are medical gowns for moderate-risk situations of liquid penetration. Compared to the former level, it bars a more significant amount of splatter from infecting the wearer. Health workers wear this gown for most surgical procedures in the emergency room. They may also wear this when inserting intravenous lines or drawing blood from an artery.
Level 4 isolation gowns offer the highest level of barrier protection against blood-borne pathogens, fluids, and viruses. It can prevent all kinds of fluid and viral infiltration for up to an hour. These are best suited for lengthy, arduous procedures that expose the wearer to blood and non-airborne diseases, like surgeries.
AAMI, known as the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, creates standards for medical-device and supply companies to guarantee a global norm.
AAMI created the four levels of gowns for barrier performance after conducting several standardized tests on all.
One of these tests was to measure water penetration by impact and how fabrics resist it. This is the AATCC 42-2017 test. The AAMI level 1 resulted in this test with less than or equal to 4.5 grams of water impact. Both levels 2 and 3 resulted in a spray impact of less than 1.0 grams.
The AATC 127-2017 test records water penetration into the fabric under hydrostatic pressure and its resistance. Levels 2 and 3 resulted in hydrostatic pressure of less than 20 and 50 cm, respectively.
ASTM F1670-17 tests the infiltration of synthetic blood under continuous liquid and how elements found in protective clothing resist it.
Lastly, ASTM F1671-13 uses a surrogate microbe to test the penetration of blood-borne pathogens to the materials under continuous liquid contact. If there is no virus at the end of the test, the isolation gown passes this test. Level 4, the highest AAMI level of isolation gowns, pass this test.
Health workers must wear specific isolation drapes in particular situations, from basic care to trauma room cases to surgeries. It is dictated into levels by the AAMI fluid barrier standards once they go through the specific liquid and viral penetration tests. It is best for health care workers to wear the correct isolation gown to protect themselves from infection of diseases.
]]>Since the invention of face masks, there have been significant statistics and data collection on their role as a preventive measure against viral infections. These data provide interesting insights which could serve as the basis for a safe inference on the potency of face masks.
In 2004, a survey was conducted in Beijing on the efficacy of face masks in preventing the spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). The study showed that the use of face masks was strongly protective against the deadly virus, providing a risk reduction of up to 70% for those who always used them.
In 2008, another Australian study determined how effective face masks were in controlling the spread of influenza. The survey revealed that face masks gave users 80% protection against the virus and other “clinical influenza-like illnesses”.
A more recent 2020 study examined the usefulness of face masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Researchers reviewed past surveys conducted between 2000 and 2020 on the effectiveness of face masks in preventing other viral respiratory tract infections. The analysis concluded that face masks indeed worked to prevent the spread of viral respiratory tract infections, including those sharing many behavioural characteristics with the novel coronavirus.
Experts from the University of Edinburgh Usher Institute found that face masks do reduce transmission of viral infection through droplets if infected individuals use them. Using a mask when breathing, sneezing, or coughing can reduce aerosol dispersal and the transmission range of droplets.
Surveys on the effectiveness of face masks have been conducted at various times when different viral respiratory tract infections have arisen. Varying circumstances may have had effects on the results, but the finding that face masks reduce the risk of viral respiratory tract infections stood true for all the aforementioned surveys.
During some of the times the studies were conducted, there was no enforcement by law to use face masks, and individuals chose whether or not to wear them based on their perception of associated risks. One of the surveys recognized this factor and highlighted that the effectiveness of face masks would be higher in situations where everyone was compliant with its usage.
Face masks go a long way in curbing the spread of viral infections and mitigate the risk factors of viral infections. They are made using thin non-woven fabrics that are porous enough to permit breathing but blocking droplets as large as the size of most viruses. Masks serve as a two-way protection to a certain degree, filtering particles from the external environment and also limiting the number of droplets an individual releases into the atmosphere.
When individuals use face masks, they protect themselves from airborne contagions and droplets that could readily transmit from infected persons nearby. On the flip side, when an infected person uses a face mask, a significant proportion of droplets from the nose and mouth remain trapped in the mask. This could reduce the rate at which infected persons will infect others, especially during the asymptomatic periods of infection. Even when there are no infected persons around, it is still safer to wear a face mask as droplets containing harmful viruses can propagate within the lower atmosphere for a distance as far as 5 meters from the source.
According to the World Health Organization, the use of face masks is only one of the many strategic measures for reducing the spread of viral respiratory tract infections such as COVID-19 and influenza. When face masks are used alongside other protective measures such as proper hygiene, social distancing, vaccines, and clinical isolation, they have the most beneficial effects.
Using a face mask significantly reduces the risk of viral infection through contact with infected respiratory particles. The most potent of all protective measures against respiratory tract infections would be social distancing. However, a face mask could serve as an additional protective measure where contact with other persons is inevitable. For instance, in social gatherings or when attending to patients as medical personnel, using a face mask is highly recommended as it significantly limits the number of infectious particles that can be exchanged.
]]>Personal protective equipment, usually referred to as PPE, are gears that people wear to lessen their exposure to different hazards. This may be chemical, physical, electrical, radiological, or mechanical. The use of these PPEs will help the wearer protect himself from potential injuries and illnesses.
All PPEs are carefully designed, manufactured, and produced to ensure the best protection of the wearer. Today, as we fight against COVID-19, PPEs play a massive role in reducing the spread of the virus. Wearing PPEs such as plastic face shields, safety goggles, face masks, and the like prevents the wearer from being exposed to the virus.
Different establishments have been taking precautionary measures to help combat the pandemic we are facing. Several strategies have been implemented to fit the establishment setting.
Here are some measures being practiced by different businesses, such as bars, restaurants, shops, and more:
Plastic face shields are commonly used to protect the wearer from being exposed to hazardous microorganisms that may be contracted from droplets and splashes. Face shields are made from polycarbonate and polyester film (PET). It is meant to protect the whole face of the wearer because it can cover the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, and extends below the chin.
The wearing of face shields deems to be additional protection aside from wearing face masks. When you wear it, the droplets will not go directly into the wearer's face. It serves as a good barrier between your face and the droplets that may carry the virus.
Aside from contracting the virus from respiratory droplets and close contact with carriers, it can also be obtained if one touches the eyes after touching a surface where the virus landed. And since the virus can also be introduced to the eyes, this is when safety goggles come into play.
Safety goggles offer protection because it prevents the particles from landing into your eyes. It also prevents the wearer from touching or scratching the eyes, especially after handling objects that may contain the virus.
One of the most tell-tale signs of having the virus is fever. As a reliable PPE, digital thermometers play a great role in telling whether a person is displaying signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Checking the temperature upon entry to any establishment like malls, restaurants, and offices is mandatory before entry to ensure that no one sick can enter the premises.
Digital thermometers serve as a great way to screen those with symptoms and those without. This can easily be used to monitor yourself and the people around you.
When the pandemic started, face masks were the first PPE equipment that everyone picked to protect themselves. It is truly one of the best ways to reduce the transmission of the virus. Each type of mask available in the market offers protection, but not at the same level. There are available cloth masks, surgical masks, FFP2 masks, and more.
Face masks serve as a great two-way filter and barrier. It helps protect the wearer, but it also helps protect the people around the wearer. The respiratory particles would be filtered by the mask so the microorganisms that carry the virus would not be spread around everyone.
The use of personal protective equipment is one of the best ways to combat COVID-19. The PPE is made available for use, so we must religiously practice wearing these along with following other safety guidelines. Let us all do our parts in this fight!

It has been suggested that eyewear including goggles and face shields can offer more complete protection from the virus than covering the nose and mouth alone
While this is not a universal recommendation, some have advocated for it, claiming that it provides “perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces.” Medical eye PPE and protections may be optional for the public but are effective in reducing the spread of Covid-19.
Types of eye protection include but are not limited to:
There is increasing evidence that the virus that causes Covid-19 can be transmitted through the eyes, which means that people in high-risk categories should protect their eyes in addition to taking other precautionary measures. CDC has indicated that people in high-risk categories include older adults and people of any age group with underlying medical conditions. Frontline workers also belong to the high-risk category.
Eye protection equipment is also important as they protect people in areas with moderate or substantial community transmission. A study has shown that you are three times less likely to get Covid-19 if you protect your eyes while taking other precautionary measures. For people who work in places that constantly expose them to the public, it's also advised to wear them. In such situations, you need every form of protection you can get, and eye protection comes in handy.
Note that wearing goggles should not the only measure you take to fight against the virus: it should be done while always wearing your mask, washing your hands, observing social distancing, and any other measure necessary for the prevention of the spread of Covid-19.
Apart from Joseph Fair, the WHO also agrees that the conjunctiva of the eyes is a potential site of infection by Covid-19 droplets.
A study from The Lancet show that despite the use of triple-layered surgical masks, gloves and other protective equipment, there was still transmission of the virus among 19% of health workers. However, with the introduction of eye-protective face shields, there was no case of transmission reported.
The reason for this transmission might be due to the large surface area of the eyes and the periocular structures, which is estimated to be about twice the surface area of the nose and the mouth. The eyes are also connected to the nose and the mouth and so viral particles that enter through it can find their way into the respiratory system, the intestines and circulation.
Researchers have also observed that people have a higher chance of touching their faces and making contact with their eyes when there is no physical barrier to eye touching, and this can also contribute to the spread of the virus.
Covid-19 is mostly transmitted through the nose and the mouth, but it can also be transmitted through the eyes, according to experts. This means that in addition to social distancing, wearing of face masks, and handwashing, the use of eye protection like safety goggles can help reduce the spread of the virus.
Tom Costello an NBC News Correspondent stressed that goggles and face shields are most appropriate for health care workers, but if you are in a crowded environment, it may be a great idea. A study from India, though inconclusive, has suggested that protecting the eyes may make the transmission of Covid-19 about three times less likely. Another research showed that there was a significant reduction in the risk of transmission from 16% to 5.5% among individuals who used eye-protecting equipment such as goggles and face shields.
It is important to note that personal eyeglasses and contact lens are not considered eye protection by health experts. Goggles and face shields also do not offer total protection from the virus. Complete protection from Covid-19 is obtained by using goggles, face shields together with your face mask (ideally FFP2), and the observance of other precautionary measures.
You can't do too much when it comes to protecting yourself from Covid-19. We are still learning all we can about the virus and it is best to protect ourselves in every way possible. If there is some evidence that suggests that goggles can be a form of added protection against Covid-19, it is very advisable to wear them!
This is a sign that we are gradually getting out of this pandemic but there are important things to know about the vaccines and we will explain everything you need to know about the vaccine in this article.
To bring an end to Covid-19 a large percentage of the world needs to be immune to the virus and the best, and safest way to achieve this is through vaccines to reach the herd immunity.
After more than a year of pandemic, several research teams rose to the challenge and developed vaccines that protect people from SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes Covid-19. The Covid-19 vaccine distribution started in the United States in December 2020, and as of end of April 2021, more than 230 million doses have been administered, the CDC reports. 95.8 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and that’s about 28.9% of the U.S. population.
More than 1 billion doses of vaccine have been administered worldwide and while this number seems enormous, there is already a wide disparity between countries. Some countries are yet to report a single dose. Israel, with more than 60% of the population that received at least one done, is the country with the largest number of vaccinated, as of end of April.
While there is the challenge of limited supplies, the demand for the vaccines is way more than what is available, due to the fact the pandemic is global. Indeed, even disposable syringes are now in high demand.
Note that, The Kare Lab manufactures various types of syringes available in bulk, including:
Vaccines are made under strict rules and conditions that must be followed to the letter, and only few laboratories have succeeded in finding “the right recipe”.
Today, underdeveloped countries have no access to vaccines at the moment as they have to rely on more developed countries to produce and then supply them. From the statistics presented, it is obvious that even the developed countries are yet to achieve full vaccination of their population, and therefore, the pandemic might still be on for some time.
Pfizer BioNTech
This vaccine is an mRNA vaccine, and it is usually shot in the muscle of the upper arm. It entails two shots that should be administered 21 days apart. It is recommended for people who are 16 years and above.
There are categories of people who should not get this vaccine. They include:
It is important to note that if you are not able to get this vaccine, you can get some other types of vaccine.
Possible side effects of the vaccine:
Moderna
This is also an mRNA vaccine, and it entails two shots which should be taken 28 days apart.
It is shot in the muscle of the upper arm. The vaccine is recommended for people who are 18 years and above.
Categories of people who should not get this vaccine include:
The side effects that apply to the Pfizer vaccine apply to this vaccine.
Johnson and Johnson’s
The CDC and FDA have recommended the use of this vaccine.
However, it is important to note that women younger than 50 years stand a rare risk of formation of blood clots after vaccination. This vaccine is a viral vector vaccine. It requires just one shot which is usually administered through the muscle of the upper arm. It is recommended for people who are 18 years and older.
The side effects that apply to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines apply to this vaccine.
China seems to have made giant strides as regards vaccination.
Sinovac and Sinopharm are the most prominent vaccines and they are going beyond the shores of China.
The Sinovac vaccine works by using killed viral particles to sensitize the immune system of the body without risking a critical response to the disease.
The efficacy of the Sinopharm vaccine is still under close observation but WHO recently declared that both Chinese vaccines meet there requirements.
A major difference between the vaccines used in the United States and those used in China is the method of development:
However, Sinovac vaccine is easier to store, and therefore, to deliver, as it requires a temperature of 2-8°C, while Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require lower temperatures of -20°C and – 70°C respectively, which is harder to achieve when it comes to deliver worldwide.
Conventional vaccines are usually made from viruses grown in mammalian or chicken eggs, and there are RNA vaccines that are made from a DNA template in a lab. RNA vaccines are more advanced types of vaccines and here are some of the major differences:
However, while conventional vaccines have been used for years, RNA are new, and therefore, we lack of history.
Vaccines seem to be the way out of the covid-19 pandemic. The more they are produced and administered, the more the chances of eradicating the virus increase. So, we should embrace the vaccines and get vaccinated, so we can totally eliminate this virus, and return to life as we knew it.
]]>The coronavirus rapidly spread across the world since December 2019 and since then, PPE and social distancing have been widely adopted in companies.
]]>This article will provide deeper insights regarding the impact of COVID-19 over small and large-scale businesses, explain the measures taken to manage the pandemic, and list the medical supplies that the employers must provide to their staff members to avoid its cross-transmission.
According to the recent statistics of the WHO's report, novel coronavirus has affected more than 100 million people across the world. In addition, COVID-19 caused approximately 2 million deaths globally.
This pandemic crisis has affected almost every company and almost all business providers have opted for an online mode of operation and customer dealing such as online grocery shipping, e-pharmacy, e-healthcare, and online education system by schools and colleges. Besides, those businesses that could not modify their operation strategies had encountered severe losses, while some companies even shut down.
Apart from this, many business industries curtailed their resources, including human resources, material resources, costs, and finances. Many reports indicate that companies stopped active hiring by 39% in America. Not only that but many organizations laid off their staffs whereas some companies deducted their staff’s salary to a minimum of 10%.
The reason behind all these disruptions is that the businesses were not operating at their full capacity, therefore, they ran into serious losses.
Due to the pandemic, almost all countries went under lockdown to quarantine their citizens, and as a consequence, where customers across the globe started to avoid social contact, retailers were striving to adapt.
The same goes for the restaurant and hospitality industry. As the dine-in services were closed in many countries, a lot of restaurant owners have started to offer online delivery and pick-up services which have proven to increase their sales volume than ever before. Online food delivery companies have observed a considerable surge in their profits.
These online food delivery companies and restaurants have helped people to stay home while ordering their favorite meals online even at reduced charges as many companies are offering excellent discounts and packages to attract their consumers.
For restaurants that can open, safety measures shall be enforced, including:
The Kare Lab offers PPE and medical supplies for bars and restaurants.
Organizations throughout the globe have come together to develop innovative solutions to fight this pandemic and improve public health without compromising their economic and social growth.
For instance, almost all companies have adopted a “work from home” strategy for their employees to avoid social contact and risk of COVID-19 transmission. Likewise, organizations in which staff members had to come to work physically were first screened for temperature and other symptoms, and if they had any symptoms, they must be isolated for two weeks.
This COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in overwhelming circumstances for all working professionals and organizations. Employers and worker representatives have strived very hard to maintain workplace safety, especially for those workers who are required to work on-site.
The common safety measures that employers should take for their employees’ health and well-being include the provision of medical personal protective equipment depending on their responsibilities, such as face masks, gloves, isolation and medical gowns, and face shields.
In addition, all staff members are required to wear protective equipment throughout their stay at the workplace.
Each employee, before entering the work premises, should be screened for temperature and for this purpose, a digital thermometer or thermal gun should be provided by the employer to the screeners.
All on-site working employees must be provided with sanitisers and tissues to maintain hand hygiene and to cover their cough, respectively. Indeed, all employees should also be provided with education about COVID prevention techniques, donning, doffing, and when to discard their personal protective equipment.
Apart from this, workplaces should be modified as per the state guidelines to make them COVID-safe and healthy for workers. Some of the common measures include:
The novel coronavirus has hit almost all industries, workplaces, and organizations, but suitable and timely measures can reduce the risk and transmission of infection. Standardized operating procedures and workplace policies should be developed, implemented, and monitored to foster employee safety at work, including protective equipment, screening, hand hygiene, medical supplies, and social distancing.
]]>However, before you start throwing your masks away and neglect other safety measures, health experts are keen on continuing these to ensure everyone’s safety, especially in public settings.
The pace of immunizations against COVID-19 has picked up all over the world. This raises an important question everybody is eager to know: are we going to achieve collective immunity soon and go back to our normal lives?
Collective immunity, otherwise known as herd immunity, is the term used to describe the indirect protection of a specific population from an infectious disease. This happens when people develop immunity from having the disease itself, or they may acquire this through immunizations.
Certain diseases like polio, mumps, measles, and chickenpox, which were common back in the days are now less likely to be seen. This was achieved through collective immunity obtained from disease-specific vaccines. This is what the health sector is aiming for with the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines too.
When collective immunity is achieved, the spread of disease throughout the whole population would be reduced. The transmission of COVID-19 can be lessened. Hence, unnecessary morbidity and mortality from the virus can be more controlled.
Collective immunity can be increased as long as the people are compliant with the immunizations available. This is why getting immunized as soon as possible is important.
When a large part of the population is immunized with the available vaccines against COVID-19, collective immunity may be achieved. Vaccines are the best way to achieve this immunity, and the more people are vaccinated, the closer we are to achieving it.
The majority of scientists around the world also agree that through herd immunity, everybody could go back to the way it was before but there are many factors hinder achieving collective immunity. Factors like vaccine hesitancy and the emergence of newly mutated variants make achieving collective immunity a little harder than it already is as the present vaccines available in the market, might not be effective on the new variants specifically.
To combat these challenges, the production and distribution of the vaccines should be speed up to reach as many countries and citizens as possible.
Spreading awareness is perhaps one of the best ways to encourage people to get vaccinated and inch a bit closer towards collective immunity.
Even if you have already been inoculated with the vaccine against COVID-19, following the safety measures to avoid the said virus should still be the rule. Use of face masks, plastic face shields, medical eye protections, and following physical distancing should be continued in the coming months.
Here are some reasons why it should still be followed:
Collective immunity may still be a long way to go for the majority of the countries. Hence, we should still follow the safety measures and protocols if we want the pandemic to end. Face masks and physical distancing are still essential for limiting the transmission of COVID-19. Still, with the vaccine being made available to almost all countries, we could somehow see a glimmer of hope – the light at the end of the tunnel.
]]>Since COVID-19 struck the whole world, face masks have been used drastically to protect oneself and the people around us. It is indeed one of the best ways to lessen the transmission of the virus we are all facing today.
]]>These masks are said to be the most cost-efficient because they can be washed and reused by the users. Cloth-typed masks help trap the droplets released by the person wearing them – hence, the microorganisms present in the exhaled respiratory particles are trapped. Thus, if the person wearing the cloth mask is a carrier, wearing this type of face mask could help reduce the risk of spreading the virus to other people.
Cloth masks have also proved their efficacy and efficiency in protecting the user from contracting the virus. It is known to filter both large and fine particles not smaller than 10 microns. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), human experiments have proved that this type of mask may reach up to 80% blockage of the respiratory droplets.
Its filtration capacity also increases depending on the number of layers, along with the thread count manufactured. Current studies revealed that cloth masks with a higher thread count consisting of multiple layers of water-resistant fabric may be more effective in preventing the transmission of COVID-19.
However, healthcare workers and other high-risk individuals should only use cloth masks as a last resort when surgical masks and N95 masks are not available. The general public may use this type of face mask for their protection.
The Kare Lab offers PPE for healthcare workers as well as medical supplies for hospitals and clinics.
These single-use masks are one of the most common masks used against the fight of COVID-19 today. This is designed to protect the user from contracting the virus from other people, and it also prevents the transmission of the virus if the user is the carrier himself. It covers the surface from the nose until the chin.
This type of mask is composed of 3 layers that work to prevent the transmission of small particles. They are made of fibrous, flat, and non-woven materials interlaced together. These interlacing fibers form the barrier that prevents the entry and exit of respiratory particles.
The efficacy of surgical masks also depends on the fiber’s thickness and diameter because this determines the filtration properties of a surgical mask. Another important factor to consider when using a surgical mask is ensuring its proper fit on the face. The topmost part of the mask consists of a metal strip that helps secure the face mask when worn.
Surgical masks are recommended to healthcare workers under the clinical setting, people displaying signs and symptoms of the virus, people who came in contact with a positive person, and individuals caring for suspected cases.
People with a higher risk of contracting the virus should wear 3-ply surgical masks, while wearing face shield with surgical masks could be even more protective against the SARS-CoV-2, for high-risk individuals.
N95 masks are respirators that offer the most protection against COVID-19 when compared to cloth masks and surgical masks. The fit of N95 masks is one of the most important factors to be considered when using it. Since it tightly adheres to the face of the user, the entry and exit of the respiratory particles are filtered better. Maximum protection from the virus is given.
It is known to filter both large and small particles. N95 masks can filter up to 95% of airborne particles sized around 0.1 to 0.3 microns. Hence, it is an effective shield against the virus we are facing today.
N95 masks should not be shared with another person and must not be reused to prevent the possibility of spreading the virus, especially nowadays. People with comorbidities such as respiratory and cardiac conditions should consult their physicians before using this type of mask.
According to the guidelines released by the CDC, the use of N95 masks is not advised for the general public. Its supply is critical, and it must be prioritized for the health care workers who are exposed to the virus every day in the clinical setting. Other medical first responders may also use this type of mask.
All face masks are designed to help combat COVID-19, but to give yourself the best protection, choose the perfect and most suitable face mask for you. This can save your life, along with the lives of thousands of people.
